The short answer is, yes. The long answer is, more than you know.
Let me explain.
Your HVAC system is the single largest mechanical system in your home. It operates using; electricity- high and low voltage, chemical refrigerant- high and low pressure, airflow- return and supply, humidifies and dehumidifies, cycles your indoor air, operates at different internal temperatures-less than 40 degrees and upwards of 130 degrees, and on and on.
All of these different components which are necessary to keep your system functioning as designed all have to operate with very small margins for error. If any of these components gets outside of the margin then problems begin to cascade through your system until you end up with a total breakdown…right in the heat of the summer…or right in the middle of the cold snap.
Not too mention that ALL manufacturer warranties are dependent on the proper maintenance and upkeep of the system. This means if your blower motor fails five years into the 10 year warranty and your technician takes the part into the supplier for warranty replacement and they test the motor and can see that it clearly has not been maintained, they will deny the replacement and tag your equipment so as to void the warranty.
Not cool.
To illustrate, you wouldn’t drive your car without getting the scheduled maintenance, tune-ups, etc. without expecting it to breakdown, why would you run your HVAC system for a decade without the same expectations?
The industry recommendation and best practice is to have your system maintained and tuned-up 2x a year, in the Spring and Fall. This helps to ensure that your system is operating within the manufacturer’s recommended specifications, as well as assuring that all components, like refrigerant, input power, etc. are also correct for the highest efficient operation and maximum amount of comfort for you and your household.
In short, if you don’t make time to maintain your system, the equipment will do it for you.
